Friday, December 24. 2010Last Day Before The 'Break'......John Linton .....for those people who are able to take a 'break'. We will, hopefully, complete much of the work required to provide revised plans for most of our residential ADSL services by midday today though whether those efforts result in the plans reaching the web site for new users remains doubtful as most Exetel people will not work past lunch time today - at least not in Australia and the programming staff, particularly, have been working flat out for the past two months ensuring they complete a major external software project before Christmas. Some of the overall changes will include: - We will no longer offer 'naked' ADSL plans to new users and will provide a no charge upgrade to all of our current 'naked' users to restore a working PSTN line on their 'naked' service if they wish to do that. - We will no longer offer a Telstra ADSL2 service as the foreshadowed cost reductions on those services never eventuated and the gamble we took anticipating that they would has been an expensive mistake. We could have raised the Telstra ADSL2 prices but, as we originally decided, what's the point of Exetel offering a Telstra service at a price higher than Telstra Retail sells it for? - We will continue to offer Telstra ADSL1 services to new users for the time being - There will be four download offers for each of Telstra ADSL1, AAPT ADSL2, and Optus ADSL2/Inc PSTN Line (30,60,100,200 peak plus 180 off peak). - There will be the option of including a $10.00 add on for the Optus plans that provide free unlimited local, national and CTOptus Mobile - There will be bundled options for all three service types to bundle a mobile phone, and/or wireless service and/or a VoIP service - Pricing will be lower than all other ISPs except for TPG - New plans will have a 10 or 12 hour off peak period (either 5am to 5 pm or 6 am to 6 pm) Maybe there will be other changes as the meetings progress this morning - it's hard to do this sort of thing against a fixed dead line. How we address the 'clean up' of current old plans (used by out of contract customers) has not yet been decided. That is the really difficult process, far more difficult, than putting in place new plans, and it will take much longer.....at least until the end of next week - possibly longer. This remains a problem because, as I have said before, the various carriers only provide incentives/bonuses for new sign ups and net adds - their preoccupation with NSRI and base customer numbers is sort of understandable but it is almost impossible to achieve in a saturated market - something that they are apparently incapable of understanding. On the bright side we received another six business link orders yesterday (and have already received two more today) to take us within a 'whisker' of having a record business month which is an almost impossible to believe achievement in any December - we must be doing something right.....maybe our "bunch of silly young girls" (and "boys") are in fact infinitely better sales people than the sales personnel of a much larger company who described them that way. PS: At a little after 1.00 pm we received our 8th new business order for the day taking the total to a new record of 80 sales in a single month for the first time in any month - let alone a December. An amazing result - and there are still the days in next week! An amazing result from our very young business sales team and their, not much older, manager. Copyright © Exetel Pty Ltd 2010 Trackbacks

Thanks for the "window" to Exetel's world over this last year.
Merry Christmas! Comment (1)
Harry,
Thank you - may you and those close to you have a very merry Christmas. Comments (7)
Wasn't the $10 per month price increase enough?
There is still a need for Exetel to offer ADSL2 via Telstra as there always has been as long as the TW product was avaialble. Exetel has other advantages even if it can't compete directly on price. Comments (2)
$10.00 didn't go close.
If you have any suggestions we would, as always, like to hear them. Comments (7)
All the changes sound pretty good to me.
Will there still be a $20 or $40 plan change fee for just quota changes? Comment (1)
If I had to deal with a "bunch of silly young girls" or an office full of slimy snakes I know who I'd choose... Most IT sales people give me the creeps.

I think you might be flogging yourself un-neccessarily hard when it comes to the Telstra ADSL2 plans.
There's plenty of hype and bulls#!t when it come to the presentation of their plans and prices, but when you read the fineprint, even Exetel's most recent pricing ($10 more than previously), beats them hands down. Telstra's price for a 100gb plan is $79.95 and that's for a plan that is shaped after 100gb, and counts all uploads (so you don't actually get that 100gb to download), and it's a minimum 12 month contract. That's quite poor when compared with Exetel's most recent offering. ($78 for 100gb/180gb, free uploads, 6 mth contract) The same situation holds true for Telstra's 200gb plan... $89.95, counts uploads, shaped, and 12 month minimum contract, while Exetel's most recent equivilent offered 200gb + 180gb, no shaping, no counted uploads, and a 6 mth contract, for $88. Sure, they'll bring the price down a little lower if you bundle other services, but then you have to use full-price services (I and many other Exetel users choose to use Homeline budget), and/or expensive mobile services. And all of these "bundled"services (includng the broadband), now require 24mth contracts. No thanks. I'm happy to stick with my Homeline Budget (to enable my ADSL) and use VoIP and my very cheap Exetel mobile for my calls, and I think like me, most of the type of customers that Exetel attracts, can also see through Telstra's bad value scheming plans. I've never met a Telstra customer who was happy with their plan and service after having been there for more than a few months. (after the intial glow wore off) TPG is not the happy little oasis it's portrayed to be by some either. It seems that customers have to fight each other for that bandwidth which they are so generously selling, and there appear to be more disatisfied customers than satisfied ones. Their W/P subforum is filled with threads for unhappy customers. And it's their own customers. (not other ISP trolls who mainly seem to be the ones stirring the Exetel subforum) So please don't sell your own offerings short. Exetel does a really great job, and I for one thank you for it. Happy Christmas to you and your family and staff, and I wish prosperity for Exetel in the coming year. Comment (1)
Thank you for your good wishes - may your Christmas be merry and bright (apologies to the copyright holder).

Very well said, there are only "special" offers that are, IMHO, offered illegally if I made the law. I think that such special offers should be illegal as they are anti-competitive .... of course it is made so much worse for the fact that TW still get a huge chunk of the cost as a port cost. If a plan can be made for one, it should be made for all and the TW price should be reasonably lower.
In any case, the standard Telstra plans/offers are far from value when you factor in the very expensive ancillary products that you must take to get a false overall "better" value. There is no doubt in my mind that Exetel could offer the 100GB plan for $95 and the 200GB plan for $110. Optus have limited exchanges and then limited ports -- it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Optus can only offer product to Exetel at around 150 exchanges due to a lack of ports and a lack of will to expand port numbers at full exchanges. The AAPT exchanges are also very, very limited. We really need ADSL2 options back with TW, we don't care if they appear to cost more than Telstra, we know how to probably see the value in Exetel. And of course, I offer the very best of wishes for this Christmas and New Year season to ALL of Exetel staff and their families. Comments (2)
Having dealt with a few members of your corporate sales team, I've found them anything but silly.
Every member of your sales force has been direct, to the point and very quick to engage other people within Exetel if they wanted clarification on the answer to a question. I've had experiences with other IT sales staff that included attacks on competitors, disregarding questions asked and instead answering with completely unrelated rhetoric, calling me every day attempting to interfere with my own organisation of priorities and (my least favourite) equating much larger companies using an offered service as evidence of suitability to my organisation without addressing any technical, financial or other concerns. I've had none of these undesirable things come from any of Exetel's sales staff, so clearly this "silly" adjective comes from not subscribing to some rule set for sales people that seemingly (and unjustifiably) exists somewhere! From what I have heard and seen since we started this program - those have been my observations too.

Glad to see I'm not going mad or am just a particularly easy target in that field.
Although it's somewhat implied by my post above, Exetel's sales staff are wonderful to interact with. Every time I've suggested someone contact Lauren with regard to their connectivity needs, she's always sent me a note of thanks and I've received thank you notes from various members of the team each time they refer a potential customer to me for a testimonial (which I'll happily do more of, by the way). Out if interest. Perhaps a pay as you go might be an idea for Telstra ADSL2 (of course there will be a minimum). This could enable customers with say beach houses or other 2nd houses in non metropolitan areas to have an ADSL connection (tiny market). However, this may suit many because of fluctuations throughout the year. I've always viewed exetels approach to excess usage as very appealing. You can leave those who have no control to TPG (via Telstra).
You've been in the business for a while is there any value in such offers? While the NBN may appear to be a bit of a dampener. The greens have been big noting themselves lately so it could all be over before it starts (i'm a dreamer). Have a good Christmas folks. Comment (1)
Re the dropping of ADSL2+ via TW - Price is not everything when it comes to deciding on which ISP to use. Maybe I am different to many customers but to me reliability and lack of congestion are the most important with price a relatively distant third.
For those of us living in TW only areas there is not a lot of choice. I had moved one of my DSL services off Exetel about 12 months back (after ~4 years) as I was experiencing congestion issues during the morning off-peak period (8am-12 noon). As the bandwidth graphs appear to indicate those issues have been alleviated I was looking to move my residential connection back to an Exetel TW port and to take up 3 x Mobile Cap plans for the family to take advantage of the bundling discounts. Unfortunately that is no longer an option and I cannot get the discounted mobile plans on my other service due to different billing details (service is billed to business). Also I am more likely to switch my small office service to the same provider as home resulting in me having no Exetel services. My point is that now Exetel has started to bundle products the lack of one part of a bundle can mean losing out on revenues from other products. Best wishes for Christmas. Comment (1)
Thank you for your good wishes...I hope you and your family have a very enjoyable Christmas day.
Exetel will always offer an unbundled ADSL service. Bundling a service with a mobile will simply provide a lower ADSL price because we give the mobile bonus commission to the ADSL user rather than keeping it for ourselves. Providing the ability to bundle multiple mobiles has also been the case since we signed the Optus agreement. Comments (7)
