Thursday, January 21. 2010Dissenting Views From The "General Good'.....John Linton ....view of the Krudd cover up known as the NBN2. I was sent this summary of one persons view of yesterday's 'NBNCo Industry Consultation". While I broadly agree with the views expressed (with the exception that I don't think it will ever be built in any meaningful way), they are actually the views of someone unknown to me. (I apologise about the formatting but transferring documents and getting rid of the, literally, pages and pages of formatting has always defeated me):
NBNCo panel consisted of:
Jamie Chard NBNCo Architect, poor presenter - technically incredibly weak. The highlights in my opinion were:

I used to work with Jamie Chard at Telstra. I am shocked that he is the NBN architect. He has no idea.

Thankyou very much John, you've cut through the typical KRudd NBN FUD to get to the meat of the matter! Kudos & "Keep the NBN Real" for us!
What I don't get is why the NBN is "Death to ISPs"?? Can you explain that from Exetel's POV re: would the fictional NBN "wipe you out"? Comments (2)
I don't think any nonsense pursued by Krudd and Co will "wipe out" Exetel as a company but it will make it very, very difficult for us to provide a sensibly priced residential data service based on monopoly owned fibre - it would not affect our ability to provide residential data services via wireless.
If Telstra is 'forced' to de-commission the PSTN then there is no more ADSL there is only the NBN2 sold at prices that are determined by a monopoly and clearly aiming at doing business only with large/very large carriers. This will be tested in Tasmania before the next election to whatever extent Krudd will be able to fudge by then. (personally I think he'll use his carbon trading rejection to trigger a double dissolution so he can have an election before its obvious to the dumbest of Labor voters that there never will be an NBN). So no PSTn = No ADSl and NBN only = prices no-one wants to buy at. Luckily we are still pursuing wireless and corporate. Comments (4)
I used to be (and still is) a firm supporter of NBN. However since a bounch of ex Telstra and ex Ergas idiots were hired as pricing chief, my support dwindled. What we may see in the future would most likely be a "typical" Telstra monoploy pricing. We will again be locked into the telecom dark age!
Why NBN Co hire these idiots? Really doesn't make sense to me. Comment (1)
The "race to the bottom" is happening in-house in terms of their hiring it seems too.
I've also heard names of netadmins heading to Melbourne to work on "a national broadband project" who no-one would want to work with (the word 'narcissist' doesn't even come close). Look out for router configs 4x the size & complexity necessary, just to stroke the ego of the nutjob netadmin.. Comments (2)
There will be no NBN (at least not in the lifetimes of anyone reading this).
I suspect they will just let the years roll on, until it is quietly dropped. I also predict the Tasmanian NBN will not be successful or indeed even be completed. Comment (1)
I love that the plan hasn't changed (what little plan there is), but now that ex-Telstra and ex-Ergas "idiots" have been hired, suddenly the NBN is in trouble...
Convenient. The plan was a donkey before these 'idiots' came on board and remains so afterwards and yet, if it fails, the blame will rest squarely on their heads... On the plus side, I doubt these fools really care what Joe Anonymous thinks about them. Comment (1)
Maybe I'm not following something but...
"We the consumers will becompletely screwed because we will be paying two-to-three times more for fixed broadband especially if the take-up will be less than 60% as Paul Broad of AAPT so wisely warned." What's to stop us staying on "NAKED" ADSL via Exetel at probably 20% of the cost? Would Telstra/Optus/Exetel pull the plug on ADSL2+ ? Comment (1)
Yes - part of Krudd's nonsense is to decommission the PSTN so the only home connection is the NBN2.....or wireless unless he gets around to making that impossible.

Has Rudd said the PSTN will be decommissioned?
Comment (1)
It's the only way to get anyone to buy the BNB2.

The government is fat and very wasteful. I feel someone will just string some lines up in the CBD areas of Australia and undercut the government. For every person doing something the government will have one or two doing nothing of worth.
This NBN is a joke. If we let it go on any more it is just going to cost us more! Comment (1)
The best communications decision I have ever made, (not that I have had many available to me other than choosing an ISP and ending up with Exetel) was to follow you guys into wireless and shortly after, canceling my ADSL service.
So if the day comes, as Conroy says that there will be a knock on the door, and someone says, hi, we’re here to connect you to the NBN. I’ll be so happy to say no thanks, it’s not required. Saying quietly to myself. And you can tell my favourite minister what he can do with it. Wireless is the only way to completely avoid this NBN nonsense. Any one who says it isn’t good enough either hasn’t tried it, or isn’t determined enough to make it work. Comment (1)
...and wireless will get faster and cheaper as each six months passes with more and more coverage.

If only they could get their act together and rather than fight each other for adsl users, put the money towards putting in a few more 3G towers....
Kinda sick of the moment I go off the highway losing all smartphone benefits. Comment (1)
And the final word on this blog entry is Scandinavia to get 84Mbps HSPA in Q4 with the same article indicating Ericsson looking at 168Mpbs HSPA data rates. http://www.itworldcanada.com/blogs/network-world/2010/01/20/how-fast-can-we-go/52751/

Yes, in very small cell sizes with no other users in the cell - Spectrum permitting. You have to look behind the marketing hype.

And at the recent "realizing the broadband future" mutual tug-fest, Mike Quigley metioned that NBN would be distributing ATAs. (i.e. VOIP Adaptors)
So, they are putting the telcos and the ISPs out of business. Is the ACCC listening? or awake? Comment (1)
My thought on this whole matter:
The Pope and Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia, are on the same stage in front of a huge crowd at the Rugby league Grand Final in Sydney. The Pope leaned towards Mr. Rudd and said, "Do you know that with one little movement of my hand I can make every person in this crowd go wild with joy? This joy will not be a momentary display, like those believers in a football match, but go deep into their hearts and they will forever speak of this day and rejoice! Rudd replied, "I seriously doubt that. With one little wave of your hand? Show me?" So the Pope backhanded the bastard. Comments (3)
Usually i pride myself on staying up to date with the industry and commentaries. John i have missed this but now having access to the blog will watch with keen interest and contribute from a wireless (rural & metro) on matters that are relevant-well done and keep it up sir!
